A walk through Zaragoza
Do you know Zaragoza? If not, join us on this tour of some of the best bars, restaurants, shops and other establishments in the city, which will serve as a guide for that visit that you will surely want to make after reading this article. And if you already know it, or even if you live there, take a look because you will surely discover some interesting point that was not yet on your radar. Let’s go there!
Not to brag, but the Aragonese capital is an excellent place, not only to live, but also to visit for a few days and get lost in its streets. Despite its size – it is the fifth most populated city in Spain – and its rich history, it is an easy city to get around. Its terrain, generally flat, and the concentration of a large part of its heritage in the historic center, favor this walking tour. In any case, the traveler will have no impediment in accessing other points further away from the center thanks to the extensive public transport network, which includes a tram line that crosses the city from end to end.
But first of all, you will need a place to store your suitcases in Zaragoza, and for this we recommend Megalockers, with its smart lockers of all sizes, next to the Plaza del Pilar and with the option to reserve in advance on their website. If you also need accommodation, there is nothing better than Hostal Plaza Boutique, right in the center and with first-class facilities.
Ready to hit the city? It will be a long day, we warn you, so a good breakfast or brunch would not be bad. One of the best options in Zaragoza is Elio & Coco, where you can recharge your batteries with some incredible dishes, whether you like sweet or savory, and accompanied by a great specialty coffee. Now yes!
In this article we do not want to delve into the cultural and landscape wealth of Zaragoza, which is much. Beyond the Basilica del Pilar and its plaza, you cannot miss the Cathedral of La Seo, the Aljafería Palace, the recently restored central market or the many museums spread throughout the city. As well as endless walks through the Parque Grande José Antonio Labordeta, the Paseo de La Independencia, the old Expo 2008 space or, of course, the beautiful banks of the Ebro River, the true protagonist and germ of this great city. You will find countless articles about the history of Zaragoza throughout the Internet, as well as various options for guided tours that will satisfy your traveling curiosity.
After a few hours discovering the city, you will surely have worked up an appetite. Well, if you want to go big, we cannot fail to mention Absinthium, one of the city’s gastronomic temples, with unsurpassed raw materials.
With a full stomach and renewed energy, it’s time to return to the streets, to continue enjoying this great city. Although it is also possible that you have some work commitment, since Zaragoza is an important business center, partly due to its privileged location within Spain, halfway between such important cities as Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao and Valencia. That is why every year it hosts numerous national and international events that are held at Zaragoza Congresos, an organization with which we have been associated for many years.
With all the homework done, it’s time to have dinner and enjoy a good beer. Aside from our brewpub, you should know that Zaragoza has one of the best craft beer scenes in Spain, with many options for a great beer route, depending on the area you are in, the music you like or your budget. Hoppy, Mononoke, Beer Corner, Veltins Arena, Bull McCabe’s, El Refugio del Crápula, La Abadía de Glastonbury, Invictus or Rekonkista are some of them. Some are more specialized in craft beer, others broadcast all kinds of televised sports, there are some focused on gluten-free food, musical events, monologues… The important thing is that in all of them you will feel at home and you will have some craft beer option.
We are brewers, we cannot deny it, but it would be unfair to talk about Zaragoza – and Aragon in general – and not mention other gems of its gastronomy, such as ternasco, migas, borage, wine or cheese. If you are a fan of the latter, at La Rinconada del Queso you will find his sanctuary in Zaragoza. And if you want to make a varied purchase, but at the same time close and with social commitment, we recommend A Vecinal cooperative supermarket.
And so we come to the end of our path, with the hope that we have encouraged you to visit Zaragoza. There is no doubt that it is an almost infinite city with a very high gastronomic level, so it has not been our intention to mention all the establishments of interest in the city, but rather to serve as an introduction and name those that we know first-hand. As they say: not everyone is there, but everyone is there. We are waiting for you in Zaragoza!
